Shad roe

Good news (mostly) for shad roe afficianados. Noted in foraging over the weekend that shad roe sets are widely available in the area. Saw them at Balducci's in McLean at $11.99 a set (large) and a fellow shad roe lover bought his at M. Slavin on Glebe at $9.99 a set, said to be generous size. Saw boned shad at Whole Foods near Tyson's Corner and asked the fishmonger about the roe. He said they had sold out at -- get this -- $21.99 a set! By far the highest price I've ever seen quoted outside a white tablecloth restaurant. If normal trends hold, prices should come down as the all-to-brief season progresses. Would like to hear from other hounds about availability and better prices than these if you see them, at market or in eateries.
