Sending Up the Chowhound Bat Signal!

Hi again, folks. I'm on tour guide duty for 4th of July weekend: A friend is coming to visit with her mother and 6 friends. They're all from Tennessee and have never been to NYC before. As she says, their idea of fine dining is Ruby Tuesday's and Cracker Barrel (god help them). I'm looking for suggestions of where to take all 8 of them to really show them what NYC dining is all about, but the catch is that price *is* an issue for them. We have 2 lunches and 2 dinners to plan for and I think they'll each have about $200-300 bucks with them for the weekend (but they won't want to spend it all on food). So which places would you all suggest for those 4 meals, reasonably priced, and with a mix of adventurous and "safe" food in case they chicken out on trying new things? I have my own ideas, of course, but if you'd never been to NYC before but were coming on a bit of a budget, where would you want someone to take you? I really want them to get the NYC treatment without ending up having to live on the NYC streets. Thanks!
