Seeking oysters on Long Island

KB | Oct 12, 2005 11:51 AM

Does anyone know of any LI seafood markets where I can obtain good, fresh, local, unshucked oysters? I'm in the Port Jefferson area, so I could go east or west along the North Shore without too much trouble. (Yes, I have had the good fortune to eat dozens of wild Montauk oysters when the neighbors went clamming--they didn't like oysters, but we had no problem cleaning up! And they were free! So in any case I have somewhat high standards.)

I don't suppose the one remaining oyster farm, at the Oyster Bay refuge, has a retail shop nearby? Sounds... scenic.

If my only local option is a restaurant, I'll consider that too. Thanks so much for any leads.
