I seek your advice in preventing insects from infesting my indoor herb garden

small h | Jan 30, 201203:39 PM

I planted some parsley, cilantro, dill & basil in a big pot. The cilantro went south first - the leaves whitened and dried out. The dill followed, and the parsley looked like it was suffering. Initially, I thought that dry air was to blame, but then I noticed a shiny coating on the basil leaves, and some tiny football-shaped black bugs. I believe them to be thrips (which is a great name for a bug, or for anything). I tried spritzing with a detergent/water solution, as the internet advised, to no avail. But I'd really like to know if I can do anything to make sure the problem never recurs. How did the bugs get into the apartment in the first place? What precautions should I be taking? Your assistance is very much appreciated.
