seasoning carbon steel skillet

I recently bought a carbon steel skillet and seasoned it in the oven in a similar fashion to seasoning cast iron. It came out kind of uneven, so I repeated the process. I still wasn't completely happy with the outcome, so I put it on the stovetop with a small amount of oil, and now I have a mess. Some parts are smooth, but some of the oil dripped down the sides and I have a sticky mess where the sides meet the bottom of the pan. I feel like I need to start over but have no idea where to begin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
