Sea Urchin, Taro Leaf, Fresh Tumeric root and Live Eels!- Caputo's (Addison)

Caputo's markets, in all their incarnations, have been praised many times on this board with good reason. They are what Whole Foods Market wishes it could be. Maybe I shouldn't compare them because they are catering to different segments of the market, but I do get a guilty pleasure of wandering through Whole Foods on occasion to see people doing actual full-on weekly shopping there. Come one, come all-Half the quantity for twice the price! They are good for some bulk things, exotica for a special recipe, and their seafood, while dearly priced, is of a very high quality.

I've been to the Caputo's in Elmwood Park, Hanover Park, and an offshoot in Des Plaines, but this semi-new one in Addison is by far the nicest and largest. There was one for quite a while a bit further down Lake St., but that was closed to make room for this new one. Their variety of vegetables and their prices are constantly amazing. Fresh Haricot Vert for 2.99/lb! Tumeric Root, bread fruit, huge sichuan eggplants, fresh uncured olives.

Deli counter. You know the variety and the clamoring crowds. Not much needs to be said about it.

I know I'm preaching to the converted, but live eels and sea urchin! The eels were not the small spaghetti size mentioned by RST in an earlier post about all things eel, but large ominous looking beasts with nothing to look forward to but a tomatoey Christmas death. The sea urchins were around 4.49/lb.

Looking at this Caputo's outpost in comparison to the D*******'s across the street makes the store concept seem laughably simple but extremely perceptive. While first catering to the large Italian community, the Caputo's gradually added Mexican cooking staples and specialty items and then recognized the widely diverse population in the western suburbs whose needs are not fully met at restaurants and the now homogenized local grocery chains. I'm tempted to stand outside for just an hour and take a poll on each shoppers country of origin.
