Dropped in around 11:30 today for lunch after recalling an article in the paper that they were open and doing a southern/Louisianna/Brazilian thing. Space is nice, new and fresh, but not that much seating, couple of two-tops and four-tops by the windows in the corner (with a counter bar along the one facing Kern St. but not really enough space to use it) and 3-4 miscellaneous types along the windows on L St. Order and pay (and sometimes pickup) at the counter, beverages and prepared salad entrees and desserts to the left.
Daily sides are listed on a chalk board (red beans & rice, collard greens, green salad, and at least 3 others) with the regular menu still a work in progress, note at top states southern fried chicken and fish coming soon. I learned that the chicken is now available but she (Savannah?) is waiting on the completion of the cooking line hood to do the fish. BTW, don't call her Patty as one customer did, she yelled out as he was leaving (good naturedly)... "don't call me that, I hate it!" They were asking everyone "First time here?", to which I replied "yeah, after waiting 3 years", they seemed a little surprised to hear from an old fan from the Chandler airport days.
I asked about the Brazilian combo, rib, tri-tip, sausage, and chicken (iirc) with a side or two. Hoping they had the feijoada unfortunately was told that it was on alternating days, and yesterday was the day. Decided to try the ribs, choice of 2, 3, or 4, the latter coming with two sides instead of just one, so went with that, the collard greens, and the red beans and rice for 8.75.
The ribs were very meaty and exhibited a nice little smoke ring at the edges (btw, as you walk in at the corner they're slowly cooking in a little half-drum unit). Sauce was very good, not sweet with a nice tang, as were the collard greens, unfortunately a rather small serving. The red beans and rice came in a small dessert-style cup, great seasoning and right amount of kick, very little rice evident, so came out more like a bean soup, but with that flavor, who cares?
The sorriest part of this whole experience? I googled the place so I could provide the address, and discovered that posters on fresnofamous.com had scooped our reliable locals by nearly two months! I hang my tired old houndly head in shame.
