New Sauerkraut in Town

For all you pickled food lovers, there's a new HEB brand of sauerkraut on the block. This is the only truly fresh/raw kraut I've ever seen packed in a grocery store (besides Central Market's bulk sauerkraut). Even those Claussen, Bubbies, and Boars Head brands you find in the refrigerated section are all pasteurized. This HEB brand has a vent in the bag (shown below) which probably took a while to get past FDA approval. This allows the contents of the bag to remain raw without exploding. Comes in Sriracha, Curtido (cabbage, carrots, onions, peppers), and Bavarian flavors and has a shelf-life of 9 months.

The Sriracha flavor is plenty tart and hot but falls short on the "sriracha" part - this is just hot sauerkraut with no other flavor (such as garlic). It's still quite good. I'm looking forward to trying to curtido, but not so much the Bavarian because that usually means it's sweet.

These are $3.69/1-lb bag. Not every HEB carries them (yet?) as it took me a half-dozen HEB's and email to customer service to find this one once I heard about them. Cedar Park and Slaughter Lane (currently out of Bavarian), stores carry them for sure.
