Had my first meal at Sandobe (1st Ave. btw 10th and 11th) the other night. Had very good Korean octopus sashimi, which was spicy, mixed with roe and hacked up into manageable irregularly shaped pieces. The rolls were on the small side, but come two to an order with fresh crab in the center of each one (no fake crabsticks) and there's a large variety to choose from. The regular sushi was big, fresh, tasty and well-crafted. Edamame came unsalted with a pile of coarse salt on the side for dipping.
Pleasant atmosphere with large tables that aren't crowded next to each other, but lacks the subdued zen feeling of classic Japanese places. (Some may not appreciate the interior design, which includes large colored lighting panels built into the surface of the tables, but we thought it was fun.) Very good service too.
Large sake menu, but on the expensive side. However the beer wasn't expensive and the bill was quite reasonable overall. Very good experience for a first try. We'll be going back.
