Sand dabs today at Frank's Fish Market in Salinas

Melanie Wong | Aug 16, 200502:36 PM

Stopped by another old-time business in Salinas that I hadn't visited since childhood. Don't know if it's still Portuguese-owned, but Frank's is in the same location just off Market Street by the train station and has been there as long as I've been alive.

We were plannng to go to Monterey today in search of sand dabs. After having breakfast nearby, I remembered that this fish market was near and dropped in. A quick peek at the case showed an array of flat fish of every size: a 3-ft. long halibut, flounder, petrale sole, gray sole, and more. But no sand dabs in sight. Then I asked for them, and the counter man said, "boy, this is your lucky day." He walked over the cold box and pulled out a couple beautiful specimens for me to touch and sniff. Fresh as can be, firm to the touch, and big for 'dabs. They're $3 a pound, a little more than in Monterey, but saved us a trip. I had 'em cleaned and deheaded. You can also have them fileted at no charge.

Outside in the car, I waved the bag at my dad and said we'd be having 'dabs for lunch. I told him that the market had fresh sardines and squid too. He got a far-off look in his eye, and said, "the fishing will be good in the bay today, all the big fish will follow the sardines and squid in."
