San Francisco mini-vacation musings

Just got back from several days staying with my sister in her new home in Bernal Heights....been a long, long time since I spent any time in the city. She had to work, so I got to explore the neighborhood. Here's a few thoughts:

Had dinner at Alma Monday night and REALLY enjoyed it. We decided to forgo the DAT menu, mainly because it seemed like too much food...all of the items on it were taken from the regular menu (Tuna ceviche, bread salad, pork chop, chocolate cake). It was the chocolate cake that just didn't appeal....

So instead we had appetizers and ordered one pork chop to share. I had the soup, which the waiter said was new on the menu..some kind of shrimp bisque. Delicious! Also had the empanadas and the ceviche off of the appetizer menu. Enjoyed it. The restaurant was busy....maybe a little too loud and noisy.

We decided to skip desert and instead headed off to Mitchell's ice cream. My sister made a rule that from now on she would not go to Mitchell's unless she walked (Its around five blocks from her house...). I guess she figures she can work off the calories. The next day I went looking for the Bombay Ice Creamery to see if I could compare their mango ice cream to Mitchell's...but they appeared to be closed...maybe permanently? (It looked like an Indian clothing store inside...). Feeling deprived, I had no choice but to go back to Mitchell's (walking) the next day! yum...nothing like that in Reno.

I took the streetcar out to the beach Tuesday and soaked in the sun...couldn't believe how warm it was! Also, had breakfast one morning at the PLaya Azul on Mission (about 26th for the cross street): ok atmosphere and good cheap Huevos Rancheros (made the way I like them!). I would be curious to know how they are for lunch or dinner (lots of seafood items on the menu....)

Stopped by Zante's and picked up a menu for my sister. Sorry, but although I love Indian food I can't get into Indian pizza...the memory of a bad Indian pizza in Mumbai thirteen years ago is still with me......

Anyway, enjoyed my brief visit! If anyone has any thoughts on any of the restaurants in that area (Mission, Valencia, Noe Valley, Bernal Heights, etc) my sis and I would appreciate it!
