We just returned to Houston from San Antonio, and we wanted to just hang out by the Riverwalk with our kids for a few days, here's where we ate:
-dinner at Acenar - excellent margaritas/mojitos. Husband had duck crepes that were fantastic. We shared queso flameado with peppers, chorizo, and mushrooms (served with nice tortillas and a few gorditas)- delicious! I had cochinita pibil - very tender pork, and just amazing. We went at an off-time with the kiddos, and service was still good. They even had a kids menu.
-breakfast at Blanco Cafe - great tortillas, I am still dreaming of them. We went straight for the breakfast tacos, bacon and cheese! Would have liked to eat here again, but got so eating two of them that I was barely hungry for dinner that night.
-lunch @ 'Sip' - picked up a couple of panini samdwiches, they were pretty good. Veggie ones - one a goat cheese/eggplant spread/pepper combo (eggplant was not that great paired with goat cheese), the other was cheese, and cucumber and peppers, it was tasty.
-dinner at Pesca - excellent. Service here was a little weird at first, given it was early (again eating with our kids). Hostess was in a parallel universe, and we waited 10 minutes before we got our drink order taken. I had straight lump crabmeat appetizer that was fantastic. My husband had some oysters that he liked, but the shucking could have been better (they didn't detach the muscle part, and we used to live in New Orleans, hence husband is picky about that). We both opted for the Red Snapper from the Gulf, pan seared, with asparagus and potato. It was soft and cooked to perfection. My husband had creme brulee for dessert, and I had a forgettable tres leches that loooked like it was topped with a browned marshmallow. But, the seafood was the best I've had since leaving New Orleans.
We went to the Witte Museum with the kids, and ate across the street at Picante Grill. We really enjoyed it. The fresh tortillas were tasty, and the lunch specials were great. I had great cheese enchiladas, and husband had the enchiladas verdes. We were both really happy with the meal, service was great. It was filled with local workers at lunch time, and it had some accolades hanging on the wall (Zagat, local paper, etc) that I forgot to check out. I also had the tres leches for dessert, and it was incredible. Dense and sweet, and slivered almonds made it even better.
Dinner at Las Canarias was our last night. It was really great. The service was wonderful. We had lump crabmeat croquettes to start (light and tiny, but packed with real flavor) and also had a roasted corn soup that was really nice. I had a filet, it was good, but I've had better - I just wanted steak, so I was set on that. My husband had the veal chop and loved it. We shared the cheese plate for dessert, and it was very nice - a great selection of cheeses to enjoy.
Hope to return in the fall, and venture further out, but for what we wanted to do this trip, these places fit the bill, and we would return to all of them in a heartbeat.
