Almost two weeks ago, i enjoyed a quick bite at Sama Uyghur Cuisine in Union City, returning to the halal food of Western China, the cuisine of the Mar family ancestors. It shares the shopping center with Mayflower and Marina Food.

For a solo lunch, I ordered only one dish: hand cut noodles stir fried with gristly beef, celery, Napa cabbage stalks, onion, tomato, wood ears and bell pepper, $11.95. A spoon as the only utensil was presented with the rustic dish. I asked for chopsticks but soon learned that it's painfully hard to eat these firm and chewy dough bits one by one. Yes, a spoon turned out to be the right eating instrument. Pretty mild, though I might be convinced there's a slight capsicum warmth, with the fresh clean taste of the vegetables.

Milk tea was slightly salty and embellished with raisins and nuts. More milk than tea, but the hot beverage was comforting on a chilly day.

One of the partners was my server and readily answered my questions about the dishes. And he did alert me ahead of time that the tea's salted. The cooking, service and decor are exponentially better here than either the Fremont or San Francisco locations of Eden Silk Road that also serves Uyghur food.

I'm curious about the Whole Lamb Kabab, $338. If anyone's interested in joining in a special order, please email me.
