New Saffron Club (formerly Southern Spice) - Palo Alto

We tried New Saffron Club a few weeks back when they were offering free buffet for their Grand Opening. Some dishes were fairly good, others, especially the North Indian, were just ordinary. But they were giving our 2 for 1 coupons, and you could use 2 per table, so we decided to get take out there again tonight. This time we focused on south Indian or other dishes they recommended. We had stuffed eggplant (Gutti Vankaya), Lamb Biryani, Chicken Vindaloo, and Butter chicken for the kids. Also got a masala dosa and pakora. The pakora was OK - it doesn't take out well anyway, but it was for my son and he liked it. Dosas also don't take out well, but the masala was very good. Vindaloo had nice spice, with a nice balance of savory spices. Lamb biryani had large chunks of lamb but no bones, good flavor some spice. Eggplant was silky smooth. The Butter chicken was just OK, but the boys really liked it. Saffron rice came with it, and they packed a number of chutneys. Some of which were very tasty.

I was pleasantly surprised and will go back, but only to focus on the south indian dishes.

They do buffets on Friday and Saturday night, but we ordered off the menu tonight. They say they are under new management, not sure if the chef is the same.
