RW: Filomena

DC Gal | Aug 4, 2005 10:17 PM

Had our RW dinner at Filomena tonight per a recommendation from a friend who dined there during the January RW. All in all, her recommendation was right on.

We had never dined here before and had no idea that such a pretty and fun place existed in the basement of this Georgetown storefront.

The RW menu was generous. 4 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 desserts to choose from. However, I opted to order from the main menu. My husband did the RW menu though. Appetizer choices were a tomato soup, a salad of figs, prosciuotto and fresh mozzarella, a mussell dish or a mozzarella "sandwich" that was fried. We shared his mozzarella sandwich and it was delicious. There was plenty to share among the 3 wedges of mozzarella. For entrees they had a choice of a dish with perch, crab and shrimp in a lobster cream sauce, a beef dish with a baslamic reduction, a canneloni pasta with sausage or a flat pasta dish with eggplant and buffalo ricotta. My husband had the fish and said it wss quite good, although he wished the portion was slightly larger. For dessert, the choice was white chocolate mousse cake or chocolate mousse cake. He ordered the white choc. and received a huge slice of cake.

I ordered the homemade ravioli off the menu and they were wonderful. I loved their red sauce - almost tasted like the tomatoes had been smoked or charred a bit before being added to the sauce. The portion was quite generous.

The other additions to the meal included some fabulous homemade bread served with olive oil and fresh herbs for dipping. And, with dessert, two large decanters holding saltimboca and amaretto were brought to our table as a sign of Italian hospitality. It;s pretty rare to receive a complimentary after dinner drink!

We will defintely go back to Filomena. The food and service were fantastic. We really like this kind of italian food and now we won't have to drive to Baltimore's Little Italy to find it!

oh - they also have a lunch buffet on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Our server described it and it sounded amazing. On Friday and Saturday it is $9.95. On Sunday, it is $11.95.

Filomena has been around for 20 years for a reason - they're serving quality food and doing so in a very welcoming way.
