Rustic Roots, Capitan

Rustic Roots is one of those local gems that isn't in any of the tour books. It's known by every local in the surrounding seven villages, though. Primarily a catering company, the two owners also run daily lunches that are worthy of the effort to find them. Located on School Road, a mile north of Hwy 380, you will find a mobile home atop a hill, one picnic bench outside, and family-style dining inside. It seats about thirty people at one time and at the peak, there is a wait. We dined at 1:30 and it was awesome.

Daughter-units Alpha and Beta, Spawn and me all enjoyed the smoked brisket; it was juicy, fork-tender, smoked to perfection with oak. Sides were coleslaw and cornbread, corn casserole, and a devine apple cake! Drinks were iced tea or sodas. The other meal being offered was fried catfish. My aunt and SWMBO ordered this dish and pronounced it some of the best catfish they'd ever had. Daughter-unit Beta proclaimed the coleslaw awesome, eating three orders of it...

The menu changes weekly but the quality doesn't. If you find yourself going through Capitan, this is the place to hit! WOW!
