The Root, White Lak, MI Birthday Dinner Report

Thanks again for the recommendation! My sister and I had a wonderful time there. She's been talking about it for days!

A rainy Saturday night. Reservations at 7:00 and we were seated promptly. Water and bread on the table in moments. We ordered cocktails. A Cosmo for sis...she's not a cocktail person, and found it rather sweet. I had a simple martini up. Really, we didn't need them, but it was a good way to start the birthday. The place was very busy, all the tables were filled shortly after we arrived.

Both of us ordered the tasting menu with the wine pairing. What a deal for $55! We sampled the crab cake and scallop apps. Second was their bright, crisp special kale salad with teeny pickled onions and the soup special-- potato with bacon and sage oil. Intermezzo of an orange sorbet. Mains were the Amish chicken w/ chorizo and porcini mushrooms and the trout with creamed corn and fingerlings. Dessert: pumpkin cheesecake and the Campfire Cup, which I found awfully sweet, but I'm not a big dessert person. Everything was plated beautifully and we found ourselves giggling like crazy at how delicious everything was.

Portions were ample for a tasting menu, but I didn't leave feeling utterly stuffed. The Michigan wines for each course included a sparkling blanc de blanc, and an unoaked Chard, which was marvelous. Dessert was served with a Six Grapes port.

And since I stayed overnight at my sister's, I hit the Keego Sausage Co. on the way home and got some of their incredible smoked pastrami and ate half of it in the car heading back to Ypsi!
