Richmond - Las Palomas – Chocomil y Licuados

Sheesh, I drank a raw egg. I’ve got to ask before buying some of these things.

Anyway I checked back on Las Palomas which opened a few months ago and they have added a number of Mexican drinks in addition to aqua frescas (there was a great looking pineapple aqua fresca today with big chunks of pineapple it it – skin on).

When I asked what chocomil was, she said it was milk and basically Nestle quick which didn’t sound too interesting till she said she would add fresh strawberries. It actually was a nice frothy drink and very refreshing.

So I get home and look it up on the web and find out that a chocomil is milk, chocolate extract, chocolate flavoring, cane sugar and one raw egg. They then blend it well till it gets foamy.

They make a wonderful licuados (milk/fruit/ice, think smoothie). What distinguished this was that the banana licuado was topped with lots of cinnamon. Great combo.

There is also a drink called chocolate casero which she said is like hot chocolate but made in the restaurant. Don’t know what that means. They also had champurrado ‘atole’ on the menu.

Interesting items were tamales with shrimp. They also had sweet tamales. I didn’t see these until after I ordered a mushroom quesadilla – one major meal. In addition to the cheese and mushrooms it had onion, tomato and a choice of meat. On the side was lettuce, fresh guacamole and sour cream. A fair bag of chips came with this. It was certainly filling and ok. However, the drinks are the best thing I’ve tried so far.
