Richmond district doughnut tasting

Prompted by someone's question about the doughnuts at Wei Lee Chinese Food & Doughnuts, I decided to compare the doughnuts from 3 neighborhood shops. My husband & I sampled a glazed yeast, plain cake, plus 1 other doughnut from each place.

Donut World (Geary & 18th Ave)
Glazed - standard, sweet, fluffy
Cake - standard, pleasant sweetness
Jelly - tons of raspberry filling, artificial of course but flavor was not overly fake

All Stars Donuts (Clement & 10th Ave)
Glazed - slightly smaller than Donut World's, but otherwise very similar
Cake - lighter color & slightly smaller than Donut World's, but tasted similar
Chocolate Old Fashioned - standard, OK chocolate flavor

Wei Lee Chinese Food & Donuts (Clement & 8th Ave)
Glazed - slightly darker color and denser texture, probably because it was fried a bit longer
Cake - darker color, not quite as sweet, with more fried crispness (a positive trait)
Glazed Buttermilk - fairly sweet with only a little tang, but otherwise fine

So of the 3, my husband & I preferred the cake doughnut from Wei Lee, while the other types were pretty much a wash. All are pretty standard. Note that Wei Lee has a relatively small selection (for instance, no maple glazed), so if you want a large selection, try Donut World or All Stars (All Stars has the largest chocolate selection).

I think I've had my doughnut quota for the month :)

P.S. Wei Lee changed their awning so it now reads "We serve breakfast daily" instead of "We services breakfast for all day"...too bad...
