Rib Nest review - Gardena

Wonginator | Nov 7, 2005 01:07 PM

Being an OC resident, BBQ options are in short supply here, and cheap BBQ is almost nonexistent. Was I ever glad that I dropped by the Rib Nest in Gardena before a business meeting last week to get my bi-weekly dosage of quality Q.

When I arrived, I first thought I might have been in the wrong place, as I showed up at noon with only one other customer, who was ordering takeout. Maybe it wasn't as popular as I thought, and the neighborhood isn't the nicest either.

I decided to order the 2 Meat combo, which for $8.25 was a great value bargain for BBQ. I got 2 pork ribs, 2 beef ribs, one side of macaroni & cheese, and 2 slices of bread.

The large beef ribs were some of the best I've had in SoCal so far, of the limited number of BBQ places I've visited so far. Top-notch quality, almost fall-off-the-bone tender, these were some mighty tasty beef ribs that rival Joey's BBQ in terms of taste and quality. Only the larger quantities of meat on the bone of Joey's BBQ beef ribs gives it the edge. Otherwise, excellent beef ribs.

I was a little bit disappointed in the pork ribs, which weren't as big as other pork ribs I've had recently and had a fair chunk of fat on them, which meant even less meat. Quality of the meat was pretty good, but not great. I still devoured all the meat on the ribs with delight.

Side order of macaroni & cheese was a bit strange, maybe it was just a different style, but there were lumpy bits of cheese that seemed to solidify around the macaroni, almost like it wasn't cooked completely. It did taste fine, but it just looked different than what I normally expect to see when I order macaroni & cheese, where the cheese is all melted and gooey.

I wasn't impressed with the 2 slices of Wonder bread, and wasn't sure what I could eat it with, so I just took those home.

As I finished my meal, the line to order was 8-10 customers deep. This was the type of crowd I was expecting.

Yup, this was some of the best bang-for-buck BBQ I've had in a long time, and I can easily recommend the beef ribs. Too bad there aren't any places like this in OC.
