Review: Greek Gourmet Naples * * * * *

Wow! I will spare you the details as to why DH and I had a ridiculous time finding a place to eat in Naples last night, but we wound up at Greek Gourmet, a tiny little family owned place at Hwy 41 and 4th Ave S.

Did I mention Wow?! We like Greek food generally, but this place ranks up there with my top five meals of all time (some of the others being at Red Square in Las Vegas, and the 5-star Montreal Casino restaurant - name escapes me).

Dinner came with a soup or salad, so we started with the grandma's recipe chicken lemon soup, which was slightly cream based, with pulled chicken, large orzo cooked so thoroughly it was more like dumplings (which was tasty, we like chicken & dumplings, just saying don't expect al dente), with a little lemon zing at the end. Very interesting and good, even though I'm not usually a fan of lemon except in desserts. Didn't eat it all because I would not have had room for what was to come . . .

Then we had the keftedes appetizer, which is savory meatballs served with pita (seemed to be homemade), and tzaziki sauce drizzeld with olive oil and sliced cucumber. It sounds kind of basic, but omg, flavors not so basic! Unbelievably good.

DH ordered a pork & rice dish that was just okay. I ordered the moussaka, which was out of this world - eggplant and potatoes layered with meat sauce that had a hint of cinnamon, topped with what they referred to as bechamel sauce. It was about an inch thick, whipped, fluffy, mousse-like bechamel, browned on top like a meringue. The whole thing was amazing.

Both dishes were served with pitas, tz-sauce, and the best green beans we have had anywhere. They were the flat kind, mixed with a fresh tomato sauce, kind of like a black pepper marinara. The beans were not swimming in the sauce, just lightly coated and phenomenal.

We saw delectable desserts at a neighboring table, but we had an itch for Dairy Queen next door. That was a nightmare. Should have gotten dessert at the great Greek place. That's fine though, because we will be going back before the trip is over!

Coming soon, review on Chops City Grill. Going there tonight!
