I lived in OKC for several years in the early/mid 90s and and remember two places that really stood out from all the chains as distinctive, good food. I'm back this weekend for the first time since I left and am hoping someone will be able to help me with any information.
The first place was a simply, french themed bakery/cafe in Midwest City right near the Air Base. The owner was a frenchman named Rene and their bread/sandwiches, some hot entrees were simply the best in the area. He catered a lot to the local Air Force crowd. Maybe not there anymore?
Second was one of the better German places I"ve been to anywhere in the United States. I remember it well because it was bizarre to find a place like this in the middle of nowhere. I think it was in Choctaw--maybe an hour east of OKC? Literally the middle of nowhere. Maybe called Old Germany or something like that. The story was a German family that had immigrated to OK a long time ago and opened up there, keeping it going through a few generations. People would make the trip from AK, TX, etc. It was great--total destination restaurant kind of place. You'd drive a long way with nothing around and their parking lot would be oddly full every time.
My kingdom (and a report) for any information--thanks!
