New restaurant in Eldorado, Santa Fe

Hi all.

As many know, Zen World Cuisine went away a while ago and we've been anxiously awaiting it's shoe-filler. Well, after much delay, Copa de Oro opened last week in that space in Agora. Their number is 466-8668.

My wife and I went in Saturday evening for supper and were very pleased. The decor is WAY different, with bright walls and a comfortable feel. The flow has changed, too, with kitchen access around the back rather than by the bar . . . makes it more of a real bar, too.

The menu is Mexican/New Mexican, and they have a take out menu too. All reasonably priced (Yay!) and interesting.

We started with the duck carnitas ($6.25), tostada style. A little steep for an App, but it was three good sized tostadas topped with refritos, lots of juicy duck, lettuce and tomato. A nice salsa comes with. Our only complaint was too much bean - the duck is very tender with subtle flavor and the beans overpowered it.

The wine list is minimal, with only a few by-the-glass selections. We both had a tempranillo, which at $4/glass was great. They have lots of beers and a full bar, so we may try margaritas next time.

Next, I had their rellanos ($7.75), and my wife the seafood stew ($16). Both were excellent dishes, well prepared and presented. My rellanos, one red and one green, were nice sized, tender chiles with good fresh cheese and a very crispy exterior. The stew was great - snapper, calamari, shrimp, scallops in a tomato based thick broth, and some nice garlic bread on the side.

We took a slice of apple pie home for later and it was good (for breakfast) the next day.

So, overall, we were happy with the new place. The service seemed good, the wait times for food were acceptable, and it was nearly full by the time we left so I'm hoping it gets lots of local support.
