Purely out of my devotion to fans of the pupusa (or just me) I checked out La Pupusa Guanaca in JP. Hounds, this may be another question of "if only I could get a pupusa here, top it with the cabbage there, and... it would be perfect. As a reminder, the little masa discs are filled with various stuffings -- pork and cheese, plain cheese, black bean and cheese -- and warmed on a griddle. Topped with spicy cabbage and served with a red sauce, they can be a delightful nosh for $1.50. I tried one pork and cheese and one black bean and cheese. They were both servicable, the bean version being slightly better, but in general the ones at Tacos Lupita are better. Here's the catch... the cabbage at Guanaca is better -- spicier, tangier, and just plain yummmier. Also tried a chicken tamale which was a let down. I was pleased with the relative heft of this beauty, but it was just mediocre and tasted too much of chicken fat, not the schmaltzy goodness that can be lush in a tamale, but just fatty tasting. I actually ended up throwing most of it out, almost unheard of for me. Once again, this proves the Cheesecake Factory rule -- bigger portions of mediocre food is just not better. All in all, La Pupusa Guanaca is worthy of a taste test of your own, and I'll be heading over to Lupita to re-check the research, but suffice to say I saved the leftover cabbage to get the best of both worlds in combination.
