Report - The Trans (Vietnamese) in Alameda.

Patrick | Jun 27, 200502:38 PM

Tried a great new-ish place in Alameda this weekend. The Trans is a Vietnamese restaurant located at 1531 Webster Street. A friend suggested it and so we ordered take-out.

Menu and details here:

Pretty good results, here is an overview.

We ordered lemon beef salad, spring rolls, imperial rolls, grilled pork with rice noodles, and lemongrass beef curry. This was plenty for the four of us.

All of the food was fresh and delicious. I would say that all four of us loved the meal and would readily go back/order out again.

There were only two issues for me:

1) The imperial rolls were very similar to egg rolls. I first tried imperial rolls at Tu Lan in SF and these are my ideal version. The Trans version was quite different. I didn't love them, but we ate them all. ;-)

2) The lemon beef salad featured raw beef. This once happened to me at Le Cheval in Oakland. The difference was that The Trans menu does not warn you about this little detail while I believe that Le Cheval did (we misread it). We ended up sampling it and it was fine. Just not something that we really wanted to eat. I was a little surprised about the lack of warning, both on the menu and when we phoned in the order, but I cut them some slack as a new restaurant.

Highly recommended.
