Report: Sweet Mama's

Checked out Sweet Mama's in Park Slope last night.

First off, the faux southern roadhouse decor makes you feel like you're in one of those retro diners or something.

The texture of the "barbequed" ribs was pretty remarkable - the meat practically fell off the bones before it even got to your mouth. But the half inch of overly sweet barbeque sauce kind of ruined it for me. The fried chicken was perhaps the crispiest I've ever had. The breast was dry, the dark meat better.

The sides were generally good, but they had run out of mashed potatoes, which was a big drag. The collards were great - meaty and spicy. The pinto beans were really good, too.

One of the people I was with is a vegetarian, and ordered a plate of three sides. At $4 per side, this isn't cheap, and they brought the sides in three TINY little bowls, giving him much less of each thing than we got with our ribs and chicken! His fried green tomatoes were top-notch, though.

The pecan pie was excellent, but would have been better if it wasn't cold.

Overall, a mixed bag. The prices seemed excessive, but I guess the Park Slope crowd will pay them. The tab was $70 for three of us.
