Report from Joe's

Ate there last night(with my wife)for the first time in a couple of years. The place was packed when we walked in just before 7. We opted for a combination of items from the tasting menu (Oh, I can remember when it was only $35) and the regular menu.

First course I had Diver scallops with American caviar sprinkled on top. Most and wonderful. There were only 2, but they were huge.

My wife had squash soup that she said was missing something. I tried it and agreed with her. Maybe sherry or some white wine. So we poured a bit of chardonnay into it and it made a big difference.

My second course was tuna tartar with smoked salmon that was superb. Great mixture of flavors and the sauce was perfect.

My wife had crab salad that was also good and a large portion to boot.

My main course was a big disappointment. Poached halibut in virgin olive oil. The fish was tough and dry and incredibly salty. It is the first truly bad dish I've ever had at Joe's and if I didn't respect him so much I would have sent it back. I only ate a portion of it and that should be enough message for the kitchen.

My wife had pork loin with was tender and moist that had a perfect sauce. I tried some and it was terrific. We had a Drouhin 1993 Pinot Noir which we had brought (corkage $20). Great wine.

Cost: $210 with tax and tip.
