Report on Austin Detour Food Visit

We had originally intended on spending the majority of our four days in Texas in San Antonio but went to Austin to see a friend and had a hard time leaving!

Here were some of the highlights (asterisks out of five)

Texas chilli parlor ***and a half
Great vibe.
Cheese enchiladas weren't special except great combo with the chili.
Chili sampler was great valuable and all were delicious- spicy one as well as sauage and bean were favorites.
Habernero was out of control spicy as promised.

Quacks ***
Hibiscus lemonade combo was yumny.
Salty oat cookie wasn't as good as I remembered it from a previous visit.

Lamberts ***
Boar ribs appetizer was a standout- not much meat;very spicy but tasty served with blue cheese dressing
Green chilli grits were okay not hot enough had a kick of black pepper
Mac and cheese just okay a bit over baked in my opinion
Jalapeno hot links with mustard were outstanding
Ribs were sweet but hard to eat with delicious escebeche and apple fennel slaw
Pulled pork was too fatty in my opinion; sauce wasn't that great
Brisket was overcooked
MIssable coconut cream pie (although admittedly not my thing)

Juan in a Million ***
great atmosphere (although we didn't see Juan and therefore missed the legendary handshake)
ate our first migas-good but not spectacular (but we didn't have much to compare it to)
enjoyed the papas and chorizo taco

Franklins *****
Waited 2 hours
Totlaly worth it
Loved potato salad
Slaw and beans nothing special
Briaket was deep and smoky the best I have ever had
Pulled pork was quite good but different than tennessee
Ribs were falling off bone and completely delicious
I didn't like the sausage too much- greasy and lacked flavor
Sweet sauce had a nice balance of vinegar
Dark one was rich woth a coffee tone that was wonderful

Snow cone trailer (near the Umalauf sculpture garden) ****
Wonderful, soft ice
Amazing variety of syrups
Really loved the more "in your face" flavors like sour grape than sangria or hill country berry

Was sad to have missed Uchi, food trailers, and more places that were recommended by kind locals. Excited to visit again!
