We stumbled onto an excellent dinner in this Cafe-by-day and boutique restaurant by night. On the main drag downtown it is Called Rene-Joule Patisserie and their # is 530-241-6750. They are only open when there is something big going on at the Theater across the street but if you are lucky enough to be in Redding on such a night try this spot. Simple decor and the menu is small and written on chalkboards at each table but it was well worth it. There were four of us so we ordered everything on the menu and it was all excellent. The Chef is a transplant from SF and her speciality is pastries....this is evident from the entrees one was a portabello Lasagna but had pastry layers intstead of pasta and the vegetable Gruyere tart was flakey and lovely as well. The Beef bourginion was very good and the mashed potatos that were served with everything were excellent (I think there was a little lemon rind in there and it worked!) Now the real topper was dessert...the chocolate torte was so rich the four of us had trouble finishing one piece! Enjoy and p.s. we heard from some locals to avoid Buz's Crab Shack like it was the plague.
