The mediocre restaurant on this corner begat the lousy Malaysian restaurant which has begotten Red Snapper. I'm afraid the new Thai incarnation isn't much better, and I suspect there are still Malaysians in the kitchen. I went with four other friends tonight, and sampled everything: green papaya salad, spring rolls, beef Panang, a chicken w/basil and chilis, whole fried snapper in chili sauce, pad thai, and water spinach with garlic & black bean sauce.
The only winner, in my opinion, was the water spinach. Everything else was too sweet, too monochromatic, too bleh. The service was sweet and efficient. It's a shame that this pleasant room can't provide better food than the other contenders on the UWS.
