Red Kwali in Newark

SunTan | May 23, 2004 09:19 PM

Tried the newly opened Red Kwali in the Lion City mall behind Newpark mall. It was a disappointment. We ordered
1. Mee Hailam (hor fun stir fried in chicken broth with chicken innards, shimps and chicken meat)
2. Ayam goreng mamak (fried chicken in a variety of spices)
3. Nasi lemak (coconut rice with assortment of sides)
4. Nasi goreng nyonya (fried rice with shrimp and shrimp paste, a.k.a. terasi/belacan)

The Mee Hailam was so-so, the hor fun was kinda chewy that the regular hor fun I've tried, and it was not thoroughly stirred together with the ingredients.
The Ayam goreng mamak arrived totally cold, as in fresh-out-of-the-fridge cold. It was definitely pre-cooked and microwave to order, except the left out the microwave part. When it was sent back, the same pieces of chicken came back totally dried out, probably too long in the microwave.
The rendang (beef cooked in coocont milk) were totally cold also.
The Nasi goreng nyonya is probably the only dish that was Ok, rich in shrimp paste and quite a bit spicy (which I liked it).
Anwyays, Red Kwali is probably ironing out the glitches in its opening phase, I'll try it again in a few months to see if things have improved.

FYI: the website is under construction.
