Red bean and Mei Long Village

Samo | Dec 17, 2002 07:00 PM

Among the many other reasons to dine at Mei Long Village are the red bean cakes (dou4 sha1 su1 bing3). These are perfection. The pastry is crisp and melting, the volume of red bean filling is such as to contribute flavor and a hint of sweetness, and the combination of yellow and black sesame seeds crowning the cakes makes them a thing of beauty. I look forward to trying the other sweets on the menu, especially the thousand layer cake (qian1 ceng2 gao1) and the eight treasures rice (ba1 bao3 fan4).

I also rather liked the vegetarian version of zha2 jiang4 mian4, rich in mushroom flavor.

My entirely vegan meal there was varied and delicious. The waitress was excellent and alert to my dietary foibles.
