A few years ago we had a celestial meal and a quite magical evening at a restaurant in Perigord which we recommended to friends that were going there. Upon their return we were dismayed to learn that they had had a terrible experience and it in fact sounded like a completely different restaurant.
We have just returned from 5 days in Budapest and naturally wanted to visit the much-vaunted Kronikas.
It is a dismal place. The service was the most charmless we experienced during our stay. The food totally ordinary and lacking any kind of flair. The wine list - concise and un-interesting. The ambience depressing.
Our most enjoyable meal was at the Karpata, Ferenciek tere 7-8. Fabulous food, wines, ambience, music - it had the lot. Fairly expensive, but well worth it.
