I've been going to the Delux Cafe for maybe nine years, and have never gotten a bum meal. It's always been high on my list of bargain favorites, one of those good bars with great food. Last night was an exception. We slipped in without a wait at around 9:30pm, one of those rare windows where there's a lull in the crowd. One entree was a chicken salad: not terrible, just dull, dull, dull strips of grilled chicken on a garden variety green salad. The other was gross: a special of pasta with beans that was absurdly over-sauced, just sitting in a puddle.
We must have chosen the two worst entrees on the menu, or caught the chef on an off night. But it was a shock, coming after such an unbroken streak of goodness. Shoulda got quesadillas. We salvaged some deliciousness with a cheese plate at the bar at Caffe Umbra (a lovely, smelly Camembert and a dreamy cave-aged Gouda). Umbra has just started a "caffe menu" of entrees priced around $9-14 for bar diners (about what we paid for mediocrity at the Delux, d'oh!) Must go back for that bargain soon.
