Ramen Salad @ Tanto, Sunnyvale

Melanie Wong | Sep 5, 2005 02:04 PM

On a recent warm night, I dropped into Tanto in Sunnyvale to try another cold ramen dish. This time the simply named, ramen salad, $7.50. I also ordered the aigama kara age, $6.95.

The large deep-fried duck chunks were fried expertly and accompanied with mayonnaise and some greens. They were very chewy, actually tough, and didn't do much for me.

The ramen salad was more Western than I expected. Served in a medium-sized glass bowl, a base of various baby mustard greens was topped with cold, silky ramen noodles and a thick squiggle of kewpie mayo. I mixed it all together and the resulting blend was dominated by the taste and richness of mayonnaise. Better to scrape off some of the kewpie next time. The salty dressing was strongly flavored and interesting with garlic, citrus, sesame, soy, and I swear, what tasted like olive paste. Some tomatoes and daikon sprouts garnished the bowl. At this time of the year, the mustard greens were on the tough side. The noodles were toothsome and had been cut into manageable lengths.

This dish offers up your daily portion of greens but I didn't find it as compelling as Tanto's clam ramen or the zaru rament ramen. Tanto holds onto its #6 ranking.
