Raleigh: good gourmet/cheese shop

Madrid | Dec 8, 201410:52 AM     2

I'm looking for an interesting shop offering gourmet foods and/or cheese in Raleigh. I know there are perhaps more and better places in Chapel Hill, Durham, Carrboro, Hillsborough, etc., but my parents are quite elderly and are in Raleigh. I'm hoping to find something relatively closer to their home and get a gift card for them.

I'm looking for something smaller and more special than Whole Foods or Trader Joes. Does Fresh Market fit into this category?

I've looked around some and see that Southern Season has a shop open in Cameron Village...at least through early January. And that there is a newish cheese shop called Six Forks. And a cluster of shops in Lafayette Village.

They aren't in to olive oils and vinegars, but stuff like cheeses, crackers, olives, jarred items like Spanish piquillo peppers, high quality artichokes, deli items that include Spanish and other hams, etc. I've looked at the web sites but it's hard to tell what's actually available in the stores as opposed to mail order. I'd also be interested in a shop that has a variety of NC cheeses. I'd prefer to avoid shipping so they can choose what they want in person.

I can and will call the stores, but would love advice from area hounds.

Any thoughts or ideas?
