quick review: Eat Me, Drink Me, Bun Me (Northridge)

Good day.. We just this weekend gave Bun Me (won't spell out the entire name again in this review) a try, and was delightfully surprised. It's a tiny storefront with about 6 small tables, but clean and minimally decorated in a purely functional style - you're there to scarf down your chow or pick it up to go. The staff is friendly and seems genuinely concerned that you are enjoying your neighborhood college-style bahn mi and pho (they do alot of buisness with CSUN students and staff, apparently). I cannot overemphasize how friendly the young asian gal and her mother/sister are, and in that sense, i suppose the place is not 'authentic' in reproducing the usual dour/quizzical demeanor I usually notice from staff at more well known bahn mi joints... We had two bahn mi, one the deli special with the usual meats and pate and pickled veggies, and the other being a grilled pork version with similar veggies. The baguette seemed longer than 6 inches, but shorter than 12, and seemingly toasted lightly. Veggies super fresh but a bit light on the pickling factor. Meats/pate tasty and grilled pork not fatty. Most bahn mi hounds will have a problem with the price, which was $3.95 for the deli special and about a buck more for the grilled pork. I enjoyed them, so I have a hard time complaining about any sandwich that I enjoy for well under $5. We also had an order of fried chicken wings drizzled with a 'spicy ginger sauce',perhaps hoisen based. Really crunchy and fried to order (6 pieces, but probably three wings 'halved'). $3.95 per order, and a good supplement to the sandwiches... We didn't try the pho, but overheard someone else who'd ordered it state that it contained less msg than the average bowl of pho elsewhere. Looked good, again, for a campus-adjacent version of pho (less murk, less funk)... This place won't draw anyone from across town, but if you are in the area and are OK for a decent bahn mi for a buck or so more than usual, give it a try. The staff are nice folks, and to quote, Major Frank Burns: "Its' nice to be nice to the nice" :-) P.S. : about a block down the street (Reseda blvd.) to the south, there is a 'Get Shaved' shave ice kiosk. Nice palate cleanser, after the Bun Me experience...
