Spent a week enjoying great food from Harlem to Park Slope with many new additions to my fave haunts thanks to the great posts from NY hounds.
A few highlights:
- i always make a bee line to Murray's Sturgeon shop for some of the best sable in N. America. While their H&H bagels are good, my host went out early each morning and procured Absolute bagels for us. Tho usually a lo-carb-er person, what sane person can resist their everything bagel...
- Babbo: We planned to arrive early and get one of the walk-in tables, but a last minute phone call snagged us a 7:30 table for 2. We had an excellent meal, especially the chestnut-flour crepe with 3 kinds of wild mushrooms, truffle, and a drizzle of a mint sauce on the plate. Yes a dollop of attitude, but really creative and delicious food.
- Recette: A disappointment. Given the great restos in NY of a similar price point, I would not recommend this one because the service was crappy. Our table, and each party to our left and our right had major screw ups in the service (a pregnant woman asks for no raw food in her tasting menu, but is served raw fish. The party on the other side requests a savory something or other, but gets sweets. We say no pork, and are served a pork appetizer instead of foie gras.)
- The BEST CROISSANT: Mille Feuille. Crispy outside, and soft interior with buttery layers of flakey dough. The pain au chocolat was equally amazing.
- Xian at St. Mark's Place: what a joy. I was really happy with that lamb with cumin and a plate of buckwheat soba noodles. The green tea also was especially noteworthy. But it's served chinese style: loose in the cup of boiling water, then you wait for the leaves to sink before drinking.
-Schiller's had a decent cuban sandwich. The cocktails were also pleasant... (as in, fab)
- A nice surprise: Stumbled into La Colombe Coffee as I emerged from the subway at Lafayette. Great macchiato.
- Zabb Elee: I went with not-so-adventurous eaters, so I didn't get to taste much. And none of the great pork listings. but what I had was superb: chicken larb and a soup with chicken, cabbage, long beans, and more.
- Happened to pass Al Di La as it started to rain hard, so we dove in and completely enjoyed a kale salad (fabulously tastey), rooted veggies salad (slightly bland, but improved with additional cheese and pepper), and my dining companions loved the spaghetti with tomato sauce and anchovies, while I enjoyed a creamy bowl of polenta. They also enjoyed Italian beers.
- And since we were staying in the UWS, regular stops at the Silver Moon cafe were obligatory.
- Sorry to see La Floridita get razed by Columbia Univ. Havana Central on B'way was a very poor substitute.
