Quick FatCat Winebar Review

Jack White | Oct 14, 2005 09:42 AM

Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting the new FatCat Winebar on Roncesvalles. It was my first time there since they opened two weeks ago and it is going to be a great addition to the neighbourhood.

The room is quite nice, stylish without being too pretentious or overbearing. It would be great for a causual meeting or something romantic if you were looking for it. I also heard that they book out the room for parties.

The wine list is great and all the staff is very knowledgable about their wine so they were able to help me out all night with suggestions and everything was a hit with me and my guests.

The menu is tapas style which is always nice because it means you get to taste! taste! taste!

I had a salmon salad with pomegranate seeds and capers that was just phenomenal. If anybody has had Chef Mathew's salmon at his other restaurant (FatCat at Eglington and Avenue) you know what I'm talking about. I'm still thinking about the salad this morning. Damn it was good.

I also had pheasant on a beef ragout(?)(spelling?) that was beautifully presented and just out of this world. a little bird goes a long way. there was nothing more pleasurable then seeing those four little poultry appendages on the plate and ripping into them. YUMMMMM!!!!!!

then there was a porkloin with calvados and apple that wasn't on the menu that the chef suggested that was also a treat. a combination that would seem self evident to chefs anywhere but this is the first time i've ever seen this in toronto. compliments!

The chef mentioned that the menu will not remain static and will change with the seasons and ingredients and his general whims. And this is a good thing people. Always follow the whims of a good chef.

And they also have dessert which unfortunately I was too full to try but I will definitely hit that up next time.

Anywho...definitely a place worth checking out.

I even saw Bob Blumer (Surreal Gourmet) there. I approached him and he too was impressed with the menu and even had a pow wow with the chef asking him about the salmon.

check it out.
tata for now.
the number there is 416.535.4064
