In October I was back in Sacramento for meetings at the Capitol. Arriving hungry, I made a quick lunch stop at the newly opened Queso Kings Grilled Cheese Bar inside Shift Coffee.
Shift is adjacent to The Greens Hotel and opens to its courtyard.
Besides coffee and cheese, the other themes are racing, cars and motorcycles starting with this bike parked in front.
And inside the racing motif includes this larger than life poster of Steve McQueen in Le Mans.
Dark Mocha, $4, was decent. Enjoyable enough to sip while using the wifi (password Monza1922) to keep up with emails.
Not easy to choose among the various grilled cheese offerings. Gravitating toward the Bay Area Brisket, $7, I was told this is the most popular offering. Tender slices of smoky beef brisket, Loleta's garlic Monterey jack and smoked cheddar on sliced Bella Bru's sourdough bread was not the oozy wonder shown in QK's photo galleries. But still plenty delicious and a bargain at the price. Greasy with butter and griddled to a crunchy golden brown, the sando was accompanied by a crunchy dill pickle spear and some barbecue sauce for dipping. But the meat was plenty flavorful and I didn't use the sauce after an initial taste.
Queso Kings original location is in Loleta in Humboldt County. It has plans to expand to Oakland.
