Another Pumpkin Question, Re: Flavor, this time

I made pumpkin soup last night, using one of the Cinderella pumpkins from our CSA. I sauteed onion, garlic, then added the pumpkin and chicken stock, and an assortment of spices--cumin, garam masala, ginger, a dash of cinnamon--and some honey too (salt and pepper after pureeing). Pureed it in the blender. Tasted it and found it to have this odd flavor that I don't care for, but not at all one generated by the spices. It was almost soapy, for lack of a better word. A friend had made a similar soup, with the same pumpkin (i'd given it to her) and while it had a lovely consistency, it also had this odd flavor. Is it the pumpkin? Is there another pumpkin that wouldn't have such a taste? The only other time i've made pumpkin soup, I'd used canned pumpkin, which does of course taste different. Any words of wisdom?
Thanks!
