Pumpkin Pie Tour de Force @ Water Street Bistro (Petaluma)

Melanie Wong | Nov 18, 200611:21 PM     14

Headed north this afternoon, I got off the freeway for a jaunt through downtown Petaluma. I had thoughts of picking up a treat at Della Fattoria's cafe. However, parked a few microns closer to Water Street Bistro, I walked over there first . . . and so glad that I did.

Approaching the bistro, I noticed that it had claimed a larger section of the sidewalk for dining al fresco. Turns out that the adjoining space has been turned into a new dining area and debuted last weekend. Here's one view of it.

The warm colors with the bright sunlight streaming in were so welcoming, I had to get something to eat here and sit a spell. Always hard to choose among the baked goods, I passed over some luscious fruit galettes to point at a pie stand, asking, "Is this pumpkin or sweet potato pie?" The counter girl answered, "That's pumpkin, but it's made with real pumpkins, not canned, so will be different than anything you've had."

Though I've had from-scratch pumpkin pies before, she was right, this was unlike any of those efforts and light years better. Coarse-textured with some fiber, the pumpkin filling was barely sweet and had a deep roasted squash flavor with a hint of brown spices in the background. It had set-up nicely without being too firm or too wet. The oh-so-flaky crust was the stuff of dreams and even the bottom crust had flaky layers. So light and tender, the touch of a fork broke off a shard and a blizzard of short, buttery crumbs. Highly recommended.
