Friday afternoon I treated myself to a piece of princess cake from Scandia Bakery in Sonoma. I felt I deserved it after a lunch that was less than satisfactory food-wise.
The whipped cream was thick, heavy and rich. Nice raspberry preserves too. The custard was just okay. The marzipan was grainy. The cake was light and fluffy and reminded me of cardamon spice cake. If I'd not had Schubert's version, I might have been happier with this. But I can't complain too much for $2.75 and a well-airconditioned place to have a cold drink and cool off.
