About a week ago, I ordered a prime ribeye steak at a restaurant here in Austin. A friend ordered a prime strip at the same time. We were both pleased with the preparation but disappointed with the flavor. I've eaten lots of beef, from most of the better steakhouses in the country and tasted everything from Kobe to shoeleather. My friend tasted plenty as well. Our assessment was that we didn't have a plateful of prime in front of us.
Another friend of ours at the table is a local restauranteur with an impeccable reputation. She told us that this was common; that some places that cry prime serve choice or select. She even alluded to a national chain that is represented in Austin says prime but serves less.
I have to admit that I'm disappointed by steaks with increasing frequency (I've taken to aging my own) and that I find myself longing for the days when Peter Luger's was a short cab ride away.
Does anyone have any similar suspicions, or better yet actual accounts of this prime fraud?
