preserved lemon v. pickled lemon

I wanted to try a recipe using preserved lemon. I have never used it before. My husband went to a huge local Asian market and brought home a jar of pickled lemons. They are from Thailand and the ingredients are listed as lemons, water, salt & sugar. Can I substitute the pickled lemon for preserved lemon? If not, what should I do with the pickled lemon? I wonder whether it is truly pickled since I don't see any vinegar listed in the ingredients. Thanks. Meagan
