Preparing rhubarb for baking

Do I need to precook rhubarb that will be used in a crumble or cobbler? Some recipes I've looked at have you bake or cook the rhubarb for 10 mins. or so before topping it.

Will it bake through if I don't precook it? I don't want crunchy rhubarb! Also, feel free to point me to to good cobbler/crumble recipes.
