Portland - Taqueria Uruapan #2

That's numero dos to you, bub...

The Willamette Week (which must be a discriminating publication of quality because they publish Jim Dixon's reviews ;o) ) came out with it's Cheep Eats listing a few weeks ago. New to the city, I find these guides good starting points because they group them by area/neighborhood as well as by type of cuisine. Anywho, I noticed Taqueria Uruapan on the list...the one on SE 82nd a few blocks south of Foster.

I had passed by it a few times and assumed it was related to the one (#2) across the street from my morning bus stop on Foster. Partner and I had said, "Hey we should try this place sometime." and opportunity presented itself one night.

Partner had a burrito. It scared me. It was only a bit smaller than Cassie, our 10.5 year old dauchshund mix. An enormous flour tortilla chock full of meat (it was asada), rice, beans, cheese, etc. H-U-G-E for $4. Yup. Not kidding. SHe's a healthy eater and couldn't finish it, though she wanted to!

I had a chicken quesadilla. Again with the king size sheet sized tortilla, filled with what seemed like at least 1/2 pound of cheese, seasoned chicken meat (in sauce?), and a bit of beans. YUMMY! Again, enormous and filling and tasty...only $3 (or maybe $3.50?...definitely cost less than the burrito).

To try, I also had an asada taco (no salsa, no onions...don't ask). This was 2 small corn tortillas overflowing with meat...really, it was falling out all over the place. Cost...$1. I felt like I should pay them more!! (note: this was too much food - in subsequent visits I will get a couple of tacos OR a quesadilla)

They have red and green sauces that they will gladly give you with your to go orders and they also gave us a very, very generous container of sour cream.

Partner loves the tamarind sodas and they have other flavors too, in glass bottles. (Geez, I wish everything still came in glass...but that's a rant for another board!) There's also tortas and other stuff there too. It is tiny, with only a few counter seats, but really clean and seems to be open late. They have a board when you walk in but no menus and I don't think they deliver (Cassie, we are not in NYC anymore.).

Next to try for me - pastor taco, carnitas taco...hmmm, maybe one of those orange sodas!
