Portable Induction Cooktop PIC Selection

badgerboyng | Feb 3, 201911:03 AM     10

I will be starting graduate school next year. All of the apartments in my price range have cheap electric stoves, which I've cooked on for years and drive me nuts. When I move, I'd like to get a portable induction unit to cook with. They offer better temperature control, faster responsiveness, and possibly get hotter too.

I've heard good things about Duxtop and Vollrath. I understand that Duxtop units ($100) switch the heat on and off for a rather long time, making the temperature fluctuate a lot, whereas the Vollrath units are more precise. The Vollrath Cadet offers 20 heat levels ($250) and a "G1" engine, whereas the Vollrath Pro has 100 levels and a "G4" engine. What I'm interested to hear is whether the Cadet's temperature is more stable (less extreme/long pulses of heat) than the Duxtop or other induction units around $100. I'm also interested to hear from those who own a Vollrath Pro to hear if they thought it was worth it. Finally, do these things truly boil water faster than a general electric stove?

Thanks everyone!
