This place opened on March 10, at 786 Boston Rd. in the Pinehurst area, in the location of the former Masalaa. I had a very good meal at the lunch buffet there today. There was a large selection: 5 meat and 5 vegetarian entrees, 2 soups, 2 salads, chaat, samosas, and gulab jamun for dessert, rather than the typical buffet's kheer. (I'd never had gulab jamun before, and actually would have preferred the rice pudding.) For bread, you had a choice of dosas and/or naans, prepared to order, but included in the $9.99 buffet price. They are open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. There's a website, which my computer wouldn't access, at www.thepongal.com. The menu includes both northern and southern Indian dishes, but today's buffet items were mostly the former. The owners have restaurants in Bangalore; this is their first in America. That's promising in terms of authenticity and staying-power. I sorely miss Indian Village in North Billerica, which closed last fall, and hope The Pongal will be more successful.
