Poncelet market report: Cheap cêpes, and vacuum packed cheese at Alléosse

RandyB | Nov 17, 2009 12:53 AM

One can still find very nice, large cêpes for 20€/kg, and beautiful, small ones for 24€/kg, at the stands in rue Poncelet and the cross street. I don't know why the vergers and even the Marché d'Aligre stands have old looking ones for 40-45€/kg.

One of Paris's great cheesemongers, Alléosse in the rue Poncelet, has finally gotten its own vacuum packing machine. Otherwise, they pack to travel in thick aluminum. I've never had trouble at Customs with the old packing. But somehow vacuum packing gives me a small extra measure of security.

Right now Alléosse has the wonderful chêvre that looks like a Mont d'Or, called a Cabri Ariègois. No one you know will ever have eaten a cheese like it. This is one you definitely do not want to put in hand carried luggage.
